TESTIMONIALS

Mosley Moling

Mosley Moling has over ten years experience in high quality directional drilling and trenchless services.

Horizontal Directional Drilling is a guided boring technique that allows installation of utilities beneath roads or rivers where the path of the utility needs to change depth and/or direction.

Mosley Moling's ultra compact excavator mounted drilling rig makes possible fast efficient bores with minimal disruption. At the heart of this success is the dedicated and committed staff. Keeping the vision focused are the Directors, two brothers drawing on their Civil and Mechanical Engineering backgrounds.

Their commitment to innovation and continuous improvement ensures that Mosley Moling can be an indispensable partner whatever your circumstances.

When Managing Director, Ben Mosley set up the Moling business he did not anticipate the time required to manage a fleet of light commercial vehicles. Mosley operates 22 Ford Transit and Transit Connects, which are used to carry men and equipment to site as well as tow plant and machinery.

His staff, although highly skilled in directional drilling, were less than sympathetic in the operation of their vans. Vans could have multiple drivers during their lives, and at times could receive fairly rough treatment. Ben was concerned at both the amount of fuel being used and the duty of care he had for his staff whilst driving company vehicles.

Ben's main objective was to reduce the fleet running costs, of which diesel was one of the largest.

He called TorquingFleet to look at fleet costs and provide ideas for that may reduce operating expenses in general.

After an on site fact-finding meeting with Ben, TorquingFleet proposed a combination of measures. The high level recommendations were:

  1. Effective remapping of the Mosley fleet with a focus on economy. This would deliver an increase in fuel economy and a reduction of fuel spend – tracked by the existing Fuel Card provider's management information. At the proposal stage it was stated that a minimum of 10% reduction in spend could be achived.
  2. Installation of a speed limiting function for all towing vehicles set at 60mph and for others an absolute limit of 70mph . By limiting speed he was able to increase the safety of his drivers by preventing them from using excessive speed whilst towing or in general use vehicles.
  3. For both Transit and Connect an engine speed limiter (rev limit) be applied . By limiting engine speed you prevent fuel being wasted when engines are pushed high up the rev range. Diesel engines are different from petrol ones because their power (torque) is created very low down in the rev range. By limiting engine speed you keep the engine working were it is delivering the best torque without wasting diesel.

Mosley adopted all the recommendations made and the scheme was implemented in October 2008.

The remapping took a few days, as it was not possible to get all the vehicles in one place at the same time, however TorquingFleet were flexible with their engineer and fitted around the Mosley work schedule. If all the vehicles were in one place they could have all been done in a day.

Although there was a need to educate the drivers the changes were accepted and were seen as a valuable example of Mosley's care for them. Some also commented that the Transit in particular had become easier to drive, especially when towing.

The real impact of the TorquingFleet changes was seen almost at once as fuel consumption across all the fleet decreased. Analyses of the fuel spend for the first full month had shown a staggering 19% decrease, saving Mosley £1000 per month.

“Considering that the fleet usage and utilisation was constant, the benefits of are directly attributable to TorquingFleet and the ECU changes they made” said Mr. Mosley, he went on, “the savings in fuel alone mean that only five months of operation will see us break even, and that's without the added safety we have built in for our drivers.
